Holy Week and Easter 2017

Posted on05/04/201705/04/2017AuthorRector

Following on from the positive experience of the first Propaedeutic Session in 2016, the Pontifical Scots College in Rome has again invited our small group of seminarians to join their community for their Holy Week retreat this year. A full five days of silent retreat (a new experience for some!), this takes place in a Read More …

Bringing the College’s History to Light

Posted on24/03/201724/03/2017AuthorRector

In 1971, the then Rector, Fr Maurice Taylor, later to become bishop of Galloway, published “The Scots College in Spain”, practically the definitive word in the history of the College to that point. Since then, the College has undergone many changes and faced many new challenges, not least, of course, its move to Salamanca, its closure Read More …

Coltness & Cleland – Visit 2016

Posted on26/01/201724/09/2018AuthorRector1 Comment

Friday January 20th 2017 – a dark winter night, with the typically Scottish “post-Christmas”, January blues… In St Aidan’s parish Hall in Wishaw, however, the winter chills were scattered by memories of summer sunshine, as the group who had come to Salamanca in July of the pervious year held a reunion. Memories and stories were Read More …

Bishops’ Visit, January 2016

Posted on30/11/2016AuthorRectorLeave a comment

As has become the custom over the past few years, the College hosted the Bishops of Scotland for a week in January 2016 for their annual in-service conference. The week provided the bishops with the opportunity for a Day of Recollection (led this year by Fr Peter Muller, an American Norbertine priest based in Salamanca) Read More …

A group of over 30 S4 pupils, together with teachers and two chaplains, from St Ninian’s High School in Giffnock, East Renfrewshire, spent four days visiting the College and its surroundings in September 2016. Over the past few years, as part of their S4 Spanish programme, pupils have visited the sights of Salamanca, learned something about Read More …

We had a great day today visiting the exhibition "Las Edades del Hombre", a (now) annual exhibition of art and artefacts gathered from around Castile and León, and beyond, organised under the auspices of the dioceses of the region. Held in different locations each year, and reflecting a particular theological theme, this year's is in a small town in Palencia province called Aguilar de Campoo. The theme, "Mons Dei", reflects on mountains as places of encounter with God in Scripture and in culture as places which raise our eyes in wonder at the beauty of Creation. Fittingly, the first part of the exhibition (it is in two parts) is in a small church on a hillside overlooking the town. The second part is in the Collegiate church of St Michael in the town centre. An impressive collection, beautifully and thoughtfully presented, of art and images both classic and modern. ... See more

Fr Tom Kilbride, our Rector, recently celebrated Mass for a community of Carmelite Missionary sisters here in Salamanca, at which seven young sisters from India renewed their religious vows. Although there is a permanent community, most of the sisters come for only seven or eight months as part of their "juniorate" or formation, to have an experience of an international community, to learn another language and to discover something of the spirituality of the Carmelite saints of this area, especially St Teresa of Ávila and St John of the Cross, and their founder, Blessed Francisco Palau. At times they join us for Mass in English on a Sunday. The sisters are from all over the world, from India, Korea, the Philippines, East and West Africa, South America. These seven sisters renewed their simple (annual) vows for the final time. Next year, in India, they will make their final, life-long commitment. Our prayers and blessings go with them! ... See more

On our website, you can find a little item about our recent visit to Rome, where we joined the community of the Pontifical Scots College for Holy Week and the Easter Triduum. Our seminarians joined theirs firstly for a Retreat Experience, led by the two Spiritual Directors, Fr Stuart Chalmers and Fr Mark Cassidy, before both communities joined together for the Easter Triduum services and celebrations.
