Bringing the College’s History to Light

Posted on24/03/201724/03/2017AuthorRev Thomas Kilbride

In 1971, the then Rector, Fr Maurice Taylor, later to become bishop of Galloway, published “The Scots College in Spain”, practically the definitive word in the history of the College to that point. Since then, the College has undergone many changes and faced many new challenges, not least, of course, its move to Salamanca, its closure Read More …

New book on the history of the College launched

In 1770, a priest from the north-east of Scotland, John Geddes, was sent out to Spain by the Scottish bishops to recover the Scots College, which had been closed after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767 and whose assets had been taken over by the Irish College in Alcalá de Henares, near Madrid. A lovely, joyful surprise to be joined at Mass this morning by the "juniorate" community of Missionary Carmelite sisters, formed by sisters from 4 continents who will spend the next 6 months here in Salamanca. ¡Que nos unamos en oración!

A visit to our College's old home and, with a brief stop at the "Camposanto" on the way back to Salamanca, a prayer for those of our forebears whose bodies rest in the city.

We thank the Rector, staff, sisters and seminarians of the Pontifical Scots College in Rome for the warmth of their welcome, their hospitality and companionship as our two Colleges shared the Holy Week retreat and Easter Triduum together. It has been a wonderful experience of fellowship, prayer and not a little laughter along the way too. New friendships made; old ones renewed. Happy Easter/Buona Pasqua/Feliz Pascua to everyone! ... Fr John Haran – The Royal Scots College Salamanca

A little addition to the part of the website which tells about people from the College's history over the years: Fr John Haran, ordained in 1936, one of the last priests ordained in Valladolid before the Spanish Civil War forced the College's closure together with an image of him from1996, shortly after his Diamond Jubilee and not long before he died, visiting Salamanca for the solemn blessing and opening of the newly-refurbished College building. RIP. The second image is courtesy of Fr Michael Briody.

Our College is 390 years old today - and still looking good!
With this in mind, we paused today to celebrate with thanksgiving all those who have gone before us over those centuries, our benefactors, former students and staff, employees and friends. In particular, we gave thanks for the faith, vision and no little persistence of our founders, Colonel William Semple (of the Lochwinnoch Semples) and his wife, Doña María de Ledesma. They gave over their Madrid home to be a place of formation for Scots priests to return to their homeland to serve the (at that time underground) Catholic communities there.
Elsewhere in this page there are pictures of the two Founders. Attached here is their coat of arms and a little extract from one of the Royal Charters of the College which describes their zeal and hopes: "with pious zeal and thankful for the many mercies and benefits which they had received from the mighty hand of God, desiring to do some good work directed to his greater service... were determined to found... and endow a Seminary for Scots secular students" (ie students for 'diocesan' priesthood).
Their College has prepared so many priests, bishops, dedicated Catholic laymen and others who have served (and are still serving) the Church in Scotland and beyond for almost 400 years... One wonders if they ever imagined their legacy would be this long-lasting!
