Bringing the College’s History to Light

Posted on24/03/201724/03/2017AuthorRev Thomas Kilbride

In 1971, the then Rector, Fr Maurice Taylor, later to become bishop of Galloway, published “The Scots College in Spain”, practically the definitive word in the history of the College to that point. Since then, the College has undergone many changes and faced many new challenges, not least, of course, its move to Salamanca, its closure Read More …

New book on the history of the College launched

In 1770, a priest from the north-east of Scotland, John Geddes, was sent out to Spain by the Scottish bishops to recover the Scots College, which had been closed after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767 and whose assets had been taken over by the Irish College in Alcalá de Henares, near Madrid. Advent 2: "A voice cries in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way for the Lord!" Could God be calling you to be His messenger, to prepare people to encounter Him in their lives? Could He be calling you to the priesthood or religious life? #PrayVocations #TalkVocations #ThinkVocations

Happy feast of St Ambrose to all our #Ambrosians! Our College moved in 1771 from Madrid to a new home in Valladolid, to part of what had been the Jesuit College of St Ambrose in that city. Since then, St Ambrose has been considered one of our patron saints.

Advent 1 “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the Temple of the God of Jacob.” Could God be inviting you to lead his people closer to Him, in active faith and joyful worship, as priest, deacon or in religious life? Visit https://t.co/NlOBEfiJrF #ThinkVocation

We had a great day today visiting the exhibition "Las Edades del Hombre", a (now) annual exhibition of art and artefacts gathered from around Castile and León, and beyond, organised under the auspices of the dioceses of the region. Held in different locations each year, and reflecting a particular theological theme, this year's is in a small town in Palencia province called Aguilar de Campoo. The theme, "Mons Dei", reflects on mountains as places of encounter with God in Scripture and in culture as places which raise our eyes in wonder at the beauty of Creation. Fittingly, the first part of the exhibition (it is in two parts) is in a small church on a hillside overlooking the town. The second part is in the Collegiate church of St Michael in the town centre. An impressive collection, beautifully and thoughtfully presented, of art and images both classic and modern. ... See more

Fr Tom Kilbride, our Rector, recently celebrated Mass for a community of Carmelite Missionary sisters here in Salamanca, at which seven young sisters from India renewed their religious vows. Although there is a permanent community, most of the sisters come for only seven or eight months as part of their "juniorate" or formation, to have an experience of an international community, to learn another language and to discover something of the spirituality of the Carmelite saints of this area, especially St Teresa of Ávila and St John of the Cross, and their founder, Blessed Francisco Palau. At times they join us for Mass in English on a Sunday. The sisters are from all over the world, from India, Korea, the Philippines, East and West Africa, South America. These seven sisters renewed their simple (annual) vows for the final time. Next year, in India, they will make their final, life-long commitment. Our prayers and blessings go with them! ... See more

On our website, you can find a little item about our recent visit to Rome, where we joined the community of the Pontifical Scots College for Holy Week and the Easter Triduum. Our seminarians joined theirs firstly for a Retreat Experience, led by the two Spiritual Directors, Fr Stuart Chalmers and Fr Mark Cassidy, before both communities joined together for the Easter Triduum services and celebrations.
